'Hey Arnold' New TV Movie in the Works at Nickelodeon

Publish date: 2024-06-14

Everyone’s favorite football-headed cartoon character is returning to television. Nickelodeon is developing a new TV movie for the classic animated series Hey Arnold, according to Variety.

The kids show originally aired on the Viacom-owned network from 1996 to 2004 and followed the adventures of a fourth-grader with a football-shaped head who lived in a boarding house with his quirky grandparents. The TV movie will pick up where the series left off, resolving unanswered plot questions such as what happened to Arnold’s parents.

The revival of Hey Arnold is part of an effort by Nickelodeon to parlay the success of Nick classics into popular new content. “Kids who grew up on these characters are now of the age that they are having kids and families themselves,” said Russell Hicks, president of content development and production for Nickelodeon Group. “Our library [of original series] has come to fruition and it’s time for it to start coming back to life.”

Episodes of Hey Arnold have recently started airing again on Nickelodeon’s “The Splat,” a late-night nostalgic programming block that has resuscitated classic ’90s shows like Rugrats, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life, The Wild Thornberrys and Rocket Power.

There is not yet a specific date for when the movie will air.
