Born on October 13, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, Jones played football right from his high school days in North Little Rock High School.
After graduating High school, he studied at the University of Arkansas, where he was part of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
His stellar college football career involved him being one of the captains during the 1964 National Football Championship. Coach Frank Broyles also made him an offensive lineman. He has been teammates with the likes of Jimmy Johnson, Ken Hatfield, Glen Ray Hines, Jim Lindsey, and Loyd Phillips.
In 1965, after he had graduated from college, Jones reportedly borrowed one million dollars from Jimmy Hoffa’s Teamsters union to set up a chain of pizza restaurants in Missouri. However, this venture failed, and he was hired by his father’s company.
