He started his musical journey as a guitarist in a band called Manchild. In 1982, he joined the funk band Redd Hott and played the guitar. After that, he became a keyboard player in a light-funk and R&B group called the Deele, where he collaborated with drummer Antonio “L.A.” Reid. One of Babyface’s early achievements was co-writing the song, Slow Jam for Midnight Star in 1983. In 1988, both Babyface and Reid decided to part ways with The Deele.

Babyface was born on April 10, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds. He is the fifth son out of six in his family. Barbara worked at a pharmaceutical plant, and his father, Marvin, passed away from lung cancer when Babyface was in eighth grade. It was during this difficult time that he decided to pursue a career in music. Being a shy kid, Babyface found solace in writing songs as a way to express his feelings. He attended North Central High School in Indianapolis. When he was a teenager performing with funk artist Bootsy Collins, he received the nickname “Babyface”, which was a playful way to describe his youthful appearance.
