Tony Khan Jokes About Being 'The Longest-Tenured CEO' In Wrestling Following Vince McMahon Retiremen
The ink on Vince McMahon's retirement statement was barely dry when jokes and memes came calling ... the pettiest of which came from the new undisputed king of pro-wrestling booking: AEW president Tony Khan. "Thanks to you wrestling fans and your great support of [AEW]," TK tweeted soon after Vince McMahon announced his retirement. "I’m grateful to now be the longest-tenured CEO in pro wrestling. Thank you very much to every single person who watches [AEW]," he joked before plugging tonight's edition of AEW Rampage on TNT.
Almost one year ago, Vince McMahon publicly acknowledged AEW's existence for the first time during the second-quarter earnings call with WWE shareholders on Thursday, July 29, 2021.
"I don't consider [AEW] competition in the way I considered WCW back in the day," McMahon said, referring to the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling. "Not even anywhere near close to that."
Despite the business rivalry, Vince McMahon and Tony Khan share some traits.
“[Tony Khan] doesn’t really have a life; his life is the products he manages,” WWE Hall of Famer and current AEW announce Jim Ross said on a recent installment of his podcast. “In that respect, he’s McMahon-like because Vince has no life other than the wrestling business.
As we reported, WWE founder Vince McMahon announced his retirement from the business of sports entertainment at the age of 77 on Friday, July 22.
“As I approach 77 years old, I feel it’s time for me to retire as Chairman and CEO of WWE. Throughout the years, it’s been a privilege to help WWE bring you joy, inspire you, thrill you, surprise you, and always entertain you," McMahon said in a statement released by WWE. "I would like to thank my family for mightily contributing to our success, and I would also like to thank all of our past and present Superstars and employees for their dedication and passion for our brand. Most importantly, I would like to thank our fans for allowing us into your homes every week and being your choice of entertainment. I hold the deepest appreciation and admiration for our generations of fans all over the world who have liked, currently like, and sometimes even love our form of Sports Entertainment," he added.
